The first track we heard by Tashaki Miyaki was Somethin is Better Than Nothin; a very sweet and gentle song really showing off Tashaki Miyaki’s beautiful lyricism. It’s dreamy music which is easy to get caught up in, so we were very excited when the whole group of “goofballs” took the time to speak with AMBY! We had a chat with Lucy, Lil D, and Rocky about how “timing is everything”, battles with sound men, and more- so have a read below!
AMBY: Hi Tashaki Miyaki, cheers for talking to AMBY! What’s the band been up to lately?
Lucy: We went to sxsw in March and then came back to LA and played a couple shows here and in Orange County. Now we are focusing on finishing our record. We are also going to be playing at Sunset Jubilee on June 7th I believe and we will be playing at Burger records next month on May 18th with Colleen Green, which we are excited about.
Rocky: Trying to get into this secret Stones gig tonight.
AMBY: If you had to describe each band member with one word, what would they be?
Lil D: groovy
AMBY: What’s the funniest thing to happen to you at a gig?
Rocky: Dora seems to always be getting electrocuted at shows.
Lil D: Having sweat drip from the ceiling on to our faces while touring this summer during a heat wave in the UK. Ok that was funny and also really gross.
Lucy: Endless battles with sound men…so frequent that it has become comical.
AMBY: Keep Me In Mind is such a tune! What’s the inspiration behind the song?
Tashaki Miyaki: It is a song about timing. Timing is everything.
AMBY: Where did the name Tashaki Miyaki come from?
Tashaki Miyaki: It is a nod to the film maker Takashi Miiike.
AMBY: Which artists have you been listening to lately?
Lil D: I’ve been really into ambient, shoe gazer rock like the church, ride & slowdive.
Lucy: I listen to a lot of older music most of the time, but I’ve been making an effort to listen to some current stuff. I really liked the tape La Luz put out on Burger. I drove around the other day listening to Melodys Echo Chamber and I thought it was really pretty. I like the Frank Ocean record and Kendrick Lamar…ummm….Foxygen did a really good job on their record too. Our walk on song at shows is Rick Ross “Every day I’m Hustlin” so we hear that at every show. I’ve also been revisiting a lot of Sparklehorse…an all time favorite.
Rocky: Been way into old film soundtracks these days. Jan Hammer, Barry DeVorzon, Giorgio Moroder, that kinda stuff. Really dig the Kavinsky record as well in terms of new stuff.
AMBY: Which three of your influences would you love to hang out with for a day?
Lucy: Neil Young, Jack White, Woody Allen
Rocky: Don Johnson, Steven Seagal, Keith Richards
Lil D: John Lennon, Kurt Cobain and Neil Young.
AMBY: If you could tour anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
Lil D: Tokyo has been my dream destination for a while but I’d love to tour in France or Italy.
Lucy: We have always wanted to go to Japan as a band. Tokyo is such a cool city. We would love to go to Paris also…I find Paris one of the most beautiful cities in the world AND there is amazing food. i love food.
Rocky: Cleveland rocks.
AMBY: What are three things you could not live without?
Lucy: Well we all have dogs that we are very attached to…everyone loves their dogs so I’m gonna throw that in there. I think a guitar is pretty needed. And our loved ones.
Rocky: Lucy, Lil D, Guitar.
Lil D: My pitbull Stella, my bass and my boyfriend.
AMBY: What has you excited for 2013?
Lucy: I just got invited to go see the Rolling Stones next month…I’m pretty excited about that. Charlie Watts is one of my drumming inspirations. Keith is pretty important to Rocky too.
Lil D: more traveling, playing shows & recording.
Rocky: San Francisco Giants Baseball.
AMBY: And last but never least, what’s something about Tashaki Miyaki that nobody knows?
Lucy: -We are all pretty big goofballs. we try to keep that under wraps. ;-)
Lil D: we recently covered “hot blooded”
