Winnipeg, Manitoba’s Boats are wicked. With multiple, talented vocalists displayed throughout their music, each song carries a personalized flare as the vocals are packed with an energetic attitude you cannot ignore. Releasing their record A Fairway Full Of Miners in February of this year, AMBY caught up with Boats to chat about having excellent posture, “and hoes”, and always liking islands!
AMBY: How would you describe Boats’ sound to those unfamiliar with your music?
Boats: We tell the border guards that we play “noisy obnoxious pop music that you probably won’t like.”
AMBY: You have recently released your latest album A Fairway Full of Miners, what are your favourite tracks on the record?
Boats: I can’t pick a favorite track that’s like picking a favorite child. But O Jumbotron and Great Skulls are fun to play at least.
AMBY: Does hailing from Winnipeg, Manitoba influence your music and if so, how?
Boats: I think I made a conscious effort to not let Winnipeg influence Boats. The writing from A Winnipegger’s perspective is a market that is so well cornered by the Weakerthans and many other bands, so I’ve tried to ignore it entirely.
AMBY: What’s the best moment you’ve had as a band so far?
Boats: Being signed to Kill Rock Stars was a big thing for us even though ultimately it hasn’t changed much. Just Being in the roster with so many of my favorite Bands is humbling and maybe a bit confusing.
AMBY: What’s the funniest thing to happen to you at a gig?
Boats: I am trying so hard to think of funny things that have happened at shows an can’t think of anything, which I directly blame our audience. You should all be more funny at our shows please. And yelling “and hoes” definitely doesn’t count. Yes Boats shows are usually sad and morose affairs.
AMBY: Which artists have you been listening to lately?
Boats: I’m really liking the Father John Misty album, the new Marnie Stern, and Fergus & Geronimo.
AMBY: Which three of your influences would you love to hang out with for a day?
Boats: I imagine my influences to be recluses living on the fringes of society so spending a day with them would be weird and terrible.
AMBY: If you could tour anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
Boats: The pacific islands. I’ve just always liked islands.
AMBY: What has you excited for 2013?
Boats: Apocalyptic potential.
AMBY: And last but never least, what’s something about Boats that nobody knows?
Boats: We have excellent posture.
Thank you Boats, for giving us your answers!
